Hey you all.....you know i just couldn't let this man, who happens to be the fifth African American Senator in U.S. history, and the only African American currently serving in the US Senate, pass by without my two sence on the subject...for the last couple of days or so, if there's one person who has put kenya on the world map, then you will agree with me that it has got to be Senator Barack Obama and his visit to Kenya.....yes, this guy has grabbed all a piece of all the headlines you can think of...LA Times, New York times, Washington post, Chicago tribune, and so many others that would probarbly fill this page.. even online, this guy has featured every where, with some describing him as Kenya's most prominent citizen ..which is a good idea, at least for an African state that only seems to make headlines in these same papers when its a big disaster or some pictures of some malnutritioned kids or better still, on how corruption is rampant.......infact one of those papers had this to write- As the only African-American in the U.S. Senate, Obama is seen as an inspiration in this east African country where more than half its 33 million people eke out a living on less than $1 a day....wooow and many more had similar lines which i don't want to get into now.

Any way moving on......What caught my attention was this- one of the same same papers had this write or say( whichever)..." Kenyans have claimed Obama as one of their own, even though he was mostly raised in Hawaii and did not know his Kenyan father well "..... that got me thinking,..As a kenyan, and i mean KENYAN not tribe, can we claim him to be our own? Need i remind you that he is an Illinois senator??

According to the Chicago Sun times, the Senator had this to say, " Now, I just have to remind everyone that I'm not a Kenyan politician.,....................I'm going there as a United States senator, but just personally. This gives me an opportunity actually to reconnect and find out what is going on and what folks need..............I want to remind people that I'm the senator from Illinois, and my responsibility is to my constituents back home........Kenya is not my country. It's the country of my father, I feel a connection, but ultimately, it's not going to be me. It's going to be them who are climbing a path to improving their new lives". Hmmm food thought don't you think?

....So, are we just riding on a euphoria state of mind that is just about to die down as soon as he gets in that flight and goes back???..well till he comes back again? After the expectations how, though, will we perceive him when his motorcade is leaving the city? Will he receive as glorious a sendoff after it becomes clear that he has no ability to solve the problems of this impoverished nation?

I wonder, u Kenyans u like overdependence on others, he waz here 2 visit his relatives.. to show their children their grandmother.. not to help u get outta poverty! I think i ve said this b4, we ve the resources but poor management combined with rampant corruption. He waz right when he accused the leaders of corruption. even God said "Struggle n i will help u." How can u xpect him to help lazy corrupt pple outta poverty... but we put all this blame on our leaders.

Gud day!

By da way, Obama has his pple to serve in Illinois..... unless he is cleared by US gava n da senate to help u. Though he has the authority to challenge US gava to help developing countries.

Wsup ya'll,

Hpe u r hvin a fab day.
I agree with u Pekiro. He just came 2 visit. Every Tom Dick n Harry (who is a luo esp) expects him 2 leave the dollars n turn them into millionaires overnight! thats preposterous!
His not even a Kenyan citizen....his an American...with Kenyan roots thats all. His dedicated 2 his country, USA n pple of illinois, as thats where his a senator, a citizen, his whole life is there, not here.
Aiiyaiiiihh........

Just realised...Narc Kenya should not hv chosen a rose as their symbol....a red one 4 that matter..
red roses r a symbol of love n they will be evrwhere n might turn 2 b associated with politics...which is not a gd thing..n if my boo gvs me red rose...i'll hit him with them....we should petition 4 them not 2 use red rose...coz they r def not showin love 2 us...

Hv a lovely evening every1! Hv 2 rush 2 class.

Oh let the people get excited about something, and when the Obama 'circus' leaves they will find something else to get euphoric about. No need to hate because others are have something to be excited about, after all, we ourselves are to blame for voting in the same 'chamelions' time and time.

The only way Obama can help Kenya is by challenging the US gava to waive Kenya's debt n give more, open up US markets for Kenyan exports without charging any fees n by this aspect we will c more investors rushing to Kenya which will create more jobs hence reducing poverty levels.

The other way is by him talking to American investors to invest more in Kenya.

...i was going through one of the local dailies and thought i would share this on the topic...Not impressed by the Obama visit is one Charles K. he says- though welcome, he behaved like the typical kenyan, whinning about the unfullfilled government promises, corruption, tribalism, freedom of the press etc. i had expected him to tackle debt relief, the US travel ban, aid, and compensation for Bomb blast victims......

Then there is this other guy who writes in to say,..let us make him the first kenyan to hold dual citizenship. he has made us proud by being elected senator and visiting kenya. Narc kenya should seize the opportunity before ODM......

hahahahahaha, trust me, its such comments that make me proud to be kenyan..or i think???

..hehehehe i like what Jay has said- true, His visit brings that feel-good factor for sure but most of our problems are homegrown and so should be our solutions......

now if only every one reasoned like this, we would all live our normal lives when foreigners come visiting......

Hey first time blogger here, interesting topic ya'll have going ....but i look at it this way Obama is not Kenyan but he unlike all other foreign diplomats who chose to critise the government...likes of Edward Clay...he has something at stake and the for that reason people tend to take him in...and thats why he is considered as part of the Kenyan "community" thus his critism of the government, the people and generally Kenya as a whole tends to sting a bit more or is taken more seriously.
As for people claiming him to be one of their own thats just Kenya for you...honestly i tend to wonder what the school near his grandma's home was called prior to the last Senate election....think about it? They just wanted the money they thought he was bringing....
